🎥 Researchers at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory develop a new plasma measurement instrument to gain information about the density of neutral atoms within plasmas. The diagnostic tool, known as ALPACA, presents itself as a pinhole camera that observes the light emitted by the halo surrounding these neutral atoms (specifically, the Lyman-alpha wavelength).
🔮 The UK's National Physical Laboratory signs a memorandum of understanding with CERN to access n_TOF, a world-class neutron time-of-flight facility. The main objectives are to (1) perform cross-section measurements of neutron induced nuclear reactions and (2) study reactions producing hydrogen, tritium and helium in a range of materials.
🧲 The UK Atomic Energy Authority and the Research Centre Řež (CZ) sign an angreement to test high-temperature superconducting tapes to be used in the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP), the UK's prototype fusion power plant. The tests will be conducted in the High neutron fluence Cryogenic Irradiation of Superconductors (Hi-CrIS), a first-of-a-king test rig capable to irradiate materials with high-energy neutron whil keeping them at -253°C.
👨🎓 Paper of the week: "Adsorption of Uranyl Ion on Hexagonal Boron Nitride for Remediation of Real U-Contaminated Soil and its Interpretation using Random Forest", Journal of Hazardous Materials (2024).
👉 Discovery of uranium-contaminated soil purification material without secondary environmental pollution.
