๐ต Blue Energy raises a $45m round from multiple investors including Engine Ventures, At One Ventures, Propeller, Tamarack Global, Angular Ventures, Starlight Ventures and Nucleation Capital. They aim to build modular power plants for small modular reactors, using shipyard manufacturing to reduce the cost from $13k/kW down to $5k/kW and build time from 10+ years to 2 years.
๐ Perpetual Atomics, a spin-off from the University of Leicester located at the Space Park Leicester, goes out of stealth. They leveraged on decades of research and development efforts, notably funded by the European Space Agency, to develop a portfolio of radioisotope power systems fuelled with Americium-241. It includes 3Wth and 200Wth heather units, as well as 10We units equipped with thermoelectric generators.
๐ฅ Researchers at Iowa State University embark on a project to demonstrate the use of advanced 3D printing technology to manufacture tungsten shields for nuclear reactors. The innovative aspect lies in the application of laser powder-blown directed-energy deposition to print tungsten-based alloys, addressing the materialโs brittleness and high cost.
